Kanawha County Adult Basic Education:

Volunteers are needed to act as tutors for adult students (18+) for a minimum of 1 hour per week. Tutors and Students will meet at a location that is convenient for both parties.

Requirements to volunteer: Complete a training course to become a certified tutor.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • recruit students and teachers
  • assist in fundraising
  • work with literacy students in a computer lab

Drop In Center / Emergency Assistance – 304.344.8053 ext. 12

The Drop In Center is a safe space for those living in homelessness or at risk of homelessness weekdays from 8:00 am- 4:00 pm. Shower and laundry facilities are available, as well as free telephone service, mail service, medical referrals, enroll in healthcare, referrals to employment and education assistance, help with obtaining official documents and food, clothing and diaper vouchers. Staff is on-site throughout the day offering crisis intervention and emergency assistance with rent, utilities, and referrals to other services.

The Good Samaritan Clothing Center is open is open to anyone in the County needing clothes without fear of judgement. Covenant House staff and volunteers coordinate the distribution.

Location:          St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Washington and Dickinson Streets.

Food Pantry* – 304.542.1718

The Covenant House Food Pantry is open to anyone in the County needing food or diapers without fear of judgement. Covenant House staff and volunteers coordinate the distribution.

Location:         First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston, WV 25301

Hours:              Monday-Friday from 9:00-12:00 p.m. and again Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Housing First – 304.344.8053

The Housing First program helps those struggling with chronic homelessness obtain and/or remain in housing, increase their skill and/or income, and assists participants in achieving greater self-determination.

Homeless Prevention & Rapid Re-Housing (Emergency Solutions Grant) – 304.344.8053 ext. 45

ESG Grant helps individuals who are either homeless or facing eviction by providing short-term assistance with rent, or deposits to put them quickly “back on track.”

Covenant House and its subsidiary, Community Housing, maintain two residences for people with disabilities or other medical diagnoses who would otherwise be homeless.

Residential & Resource Program – 304.344.8053 ext. 15

The HUD-funded program serves the 22 southern WV counties. This   program assists medically qualified individuals with rent, utilities, glasses, dentures and other housing-related costs.

SOAR Program – 304.344.8053 ext. 14

SOAR is based on a national model, identifying people who are homeless and who are disabled by mental illness and works to get them approved for SSI/SSDI benefits.

Health Equity – 304.344.8053 ext. 45

This program focuses on prevention activities targeting the LGBT community. Current efforts include Smoking Cessation classes and HIV/AIDS Support Group.

Canstruction – 304.344.8053 ext. 22

This is an annual event where local engineering, architectural, and design firms build unique, colossal structures entirely from canned food. All canned goods used in building the structures go to the Covenant House Food Pantry.

Chef’s Challenge – 304.344.8053 ext. 20

Our signature fundraiser, local celebrity chefs prepare a five course gourmet meal for 400 guests. Proceeds help stock the Covenant House food pantry and other emergency needs.

Adopt-A-Family – 304.344.8053 ext. 27

The Adopt-A-Family program assists families, single adults, and senior citizens in need that will not be receiving holiday gift assistance from other social service agencies and provides them with gifts and a holiday food box. Any individual, family, classroom, business, organization or group of friends may “adopt” a family or individual.

Ongoing Donation Needs:

  • Non-perishable food, disposable diapers – leave at the Education Building of First Presbyterian Church
  • Perishable foods – leave with a volunteer
  • Clean clothing in good condition, shoes, bed sheets, towels, sheets, blankets – leave at St. Mark’s Activities Building in the designated containers or in the designated container outside First Presby’s front office
  • Travel sized toiletries
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Money donations for all programs

The Covenant House covers a number of different outreach and assistance programs for the residents of West Virginia. From homelessness presvention and rehousing to feeding those that are hungry and clothing the cold, the Covenant House has been serving people since 1981.

Covenant House & First Presby: On the fourth floor of First Presby resides the Covenant House Food Pantry. To benefit the food pantry, each Sunday, we pick up Panera Bread’s day-old breads and pastries and sell them in our main hallway before and after the worship service. The Alzheimer’s Association provides support and education to people with Alzheimer’s Disease and their families, including support groups, information and referral, 24 hour Helpline, Speakers Bureau ,educational programs, training, advocacy and support for research.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Walk to End Alzheimer’s- Be apart of the world’s largest event to raise funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. A variety of roles are available including year-round planning committee, team recruitment opportunities, and event-day support.
  • Professional Skills and Personal Passions- If you are skilled planning, serving on non-profit boards, social work, health, finance, communications marketing, community outreach, public speaking, diversity outreach, and more, you are needed!
  • Community Outreach- Help reach the community by leading activities at churches, community centers, neighborhood events and more. By bringing information and education to places like these, you are helping to grow the cause and reach those in need.
  • The Longest Day- This fundraising and awareness event, held annually on the summer solstice, requires year round planning and support. Help develop this global even in your area!
  • Office Support- Move the mission forward by supporting a variety of office activities such as phone banks, mailings, and community efforts.
