“You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don’t try.”

Beverly Sills

I wanted to take the UC students skiing ever since I came to Charleston and discovered there are six ski resorts in the surrounding area. This is a great opportunity for the students to have fun and enjoy a sense of fellowship.

Throughout the first semester, I asked students if this was a good idea. Of course, many of the students said yes. As I worked to establish a trip, I quickly gained appreciation on how much it takes to plan such a trip. The work did not slow me down; however, the cost per person did. I wondered if there was any way to reduce the cost. Maybe I could ask the school’s student activities board to help. The more I thought about it the more I talked myself out of asking, for I expected their answer to be no.

Not wanting to give up, I realized the worst-case scenario would be for the activities board to say no and if this was the case, I could try something else. I met with the Dean of Students before the students left for Christmas break and the Dean said that the school had not done a ski trip in 10 years and she would love to help me with the planning and have the student activities board chip in financially! After presenting the idea to the student board, I obtained their help and approval. The trip will only cost each student $5.00; it is scheduled for January 27th

The above quote reminds me of how often we become paralyzed due to fear of failure. God calls us to trust him and try; he is faithful and will make a way when there seems to be none. May God guide your way in this new year!
